Interesting Person of the Day – Grigori Perelman

March 26, 2010

Grigori Perelman

Ahh, this guy is amazing. He’s been in the news recently for solving a 100 year-old Poincaré conjecture. Apparently, it’s the hardest freakin’ math out there, and because of that it took them years to confirm he was right. He was awarded $1 million dollars from Clay Mathematics Institute for being such a genius, but he turned them down. Despite being such a genius, and having many prestige opportunities (and one million fuckin’ dollars that he could accept) he refuses to work in mathematics anymore because of his intense dislike of the “intellectual and moral failings” of his peers. Hrm.

He’s a scruffy fellow, isn’t he? I’d say he’s quite the punk, not conforming to any social standard out there. I can dig that. According to articles, he doesn’t trim his beard, doesn’t clip his nails, and wears the same scruffy clothes as before. The description of his apartment, ” He only has a table, a stool and a bed with a dirty mattress which was left by previous owners — alcoholics who sold the flat to him.” as according to his neighbor is.. intriguing. I wonder what he’s attached to that keeps him living.

What really made me like this guy was when a reporter finally manages to get in contact with him, he told them “You are disturbing me. I am picking mushrooms.

I’m wholly convinced he’s probably lost a few marbles coming out of the womb, but I give him my kudos for being one hell of an interesting person. I hope he chooses to return to mathematics!
